A law enforcement official confirmed the arrest to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official could not publicly discuss details of the investigation ahead of a formal announcement expected later Friday.

A short distance across the state border from the University of Idaho, at Washington State University's Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, the same person is listed as a Ph.D. student.

Officials at WSU were contacted in order to get more information.

The four Idaho students who were killed by stabbings on November 13 early in the morning were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.

Law enforcement was initially baffled by the killings; for weeks, they were unable to identify a suspect or discover a murder weapon.
